·OUR STORY
Slow craft,
seven years on.
A studio of four chairs in the East End, built on the belief that hair is a quiet ritual — not a transaction.
·Margaux Hale, Founder
A salon shouldn’t
feel like a salon.
The Salon Co. began in 2019 with a single chair in a borrowed studio above a bookshop on Cedar Street. I had been cutting hair for nine years — first in a chain salon in the city, then in a busy four-floor studio downtown — and I had developed a strong, specific dislike for the way the industry was speeding up.
Appointments were getting shorter. Stylists were doubling up. Salons were installing televisions. Music was getting louder, lighting brighter. The prevailing assumption seemed to be that what guests wanted was efficiency, and what stylists wanted was volume.
I disagreed with both.
The best work I’ve ever done has happened in quiet rooms with one person in the chair and an unhurried hour ahead of me."
So I rented one chair, put a kettle on the counter, booked one appointment per hour, and waited to see if anyone would come.
Seven years later, we are four chairs, three colorists, one apprentice, and roughly nine hundred returning guests. We still book one appointment per hour. We still pour the coffee ourselves. We still keep the music at a level you could read over.
The studio is small on purpose. The list is short on purpose. The pace is slow on purpose. Everything else — the brass, the cream, the green walls, the antique mirrors a friend dragged in from a hotel demolition — everything else is just an attempt to make the room feel like it deserves the kind of work we’re trying to do in it.

·THE FOUR PRINCIPLES
What we've agreed to protect.
Four rules that govern how we book, how we hire, and what we put on your hair.
One guest per hour.
We do not double-book and we do
not stack appointments. The room is yours from the moment you sit down to the moment you walk out.
Education before service.
Our stylists train six weeks a year — London, Tokyo, New York. Technique is the only shortcut we believe in.
Products with a paper trail.
Color and care lines selected for ingredient integrity and provenance. Refill program available in-studio.
Quiet is the service.
No televisions. No phone calls on the
floor. No upselling. You can read,
sleep, or talk — on your terms.
